Gunner Kaylor Update :)
« on: January 04, 2012, 03:17:02 PM »

It's been quite a long time since I have posted on here. I still get on about once a week and see what is happening with everyone though. I thought I would give everyone a quick update to let you know that Gunner is still doing great! Of course he never regained his eye sight in his eyes but it doesnt slow him down one bit. He has developed some arthritis that causes him a constant slight limp and there is no more sitting for a treat...he is either standing or laying down. I just took him to the vet Monday for routine vaccines and a checkup and I decided before I went it was time for some arthritis/pain medication.  I am so grateful that I got more time with my Gunner and that he has stayed blasto free. I appreciate everyone on this site as I couldnt have saved my dog without you.

Do you know what stage he was at when you finally discovered it? My dog was just diagnosed and he was classified as moderate. I really hope he pulls through. We just started meds and he's been sleeping a ton. We only discovered it because he had what looked like a wart on his paw that did not heal after a week. We have no clue how long he's had it. Thank you and very happy for your family and Gunner!

Annie,

I know how worried you are.  The meds make them feel really yucky at first and the Blasto tends to react to the meds and cause inflammation during the first couple weeks.  It may be inflammation that's making him feel so tired right now.  Make sure you give him the meds with a fat....bologna, margerine, etc...  With Lola I found that buttermilk really helped settle her tummy in the early days.  You may want to give it a try.

Gunner started out with a cough that they put him on antibiotics for...then weeks later the cough didnt go away and he developed a terrible limp...his toe nail blew out then he went completely blind in both eyes over night! Thats when the vet realized he had blasto so I would say it was very far advanced. I will say though that when I finally found the best vet ever he told me the chances of Gunner beating the disease was slim to none. He is a one in a million dog! He ended up having to be on thyroid meds for the rest of his life and we had some liver scares from the Itra and he had to be on liver support meds too. I am so happy that he survived and he is so grateful too! Gunner now has TERRIBLE arthritis and he has appt in a week to see what I can do to make him comfortable because I cant stand to see him hurting. We tried tramadol for several weeks with no luck.

Oh bless his heart!!!   Do they think it is from the Blasto infiltrating the joints at some point?  I will be saying special prayers for Gunner.  Bless his little heart.

I will know more when I see the vet in another week. I am hoping he will do some xrays on his front legs so we can see where the problem is for sure. I will tell you tho that the leg that bothers him the worst is the one where the blasto blew out his toe nail in the beginning stages.  He has been thru so much and I plan to make him as comfortable as I can :)

Blasto still taking its revenge in yet another form!  Bless his little heart.  Really, from the very beginning my vet told me that they suffer some lasting effects from the Blasto if they make it.  He had a dog that he treated and he made no bones that the dog was never the same again.  I'm praying for Gunner.  I hope they have some way to improve his quality of life and make him feel a little better.
