Prolonged use of Itraconazole
« on: October 09, 2009, 02:52:35 PM »

 ???

We're pretty disappointed.  Jerry was diagnosed with Blasto (lung, disseminated to skin with one lesion) in Sept of 2008.  He began taking Itraconazole in Oct and has taken it faithfully, two capsules a day with cola, for a year.  A recent CT scan still shows the shadowy area in his left lung, along with one nodular area.  I asked the pulmonologist if the shadow could simply be scarring and he agreed that it could, but that scarring would not show up as a nodule.

In addition, his antigen test is still registering the Blasto in his system.  So...it's another round of Itraconazole to the tune of about $400 a month.  Hopefully they'll test him again in 3 months and it'll be better.  It seems odd to us that in the first 6 months there was a dramatic improvement in the CT scan but there's been virtually no change this past 6 months. He hasn't had symptoms for at least 10 months.

Any insights, anyone?

Hi I had blasto in both my lungs in 1999/2000. I had it for 17 months. I was on the itraconasol liquid form for the whole time once I was diagnosed.  My lungs are scared bad and I am limited to what I can do. Hopefully this next round will get Jerry better.

Hi,  I can't help you but the $400/mo part.  Northwest Pharmacy 1 866 539-5330 will sell it much cheaper.  Does your pooch have it in his/her eye?  My vet , an opthomologist at Michigas State University insists it can hang on in the eye causing a longer recovery.  My Sparkey may have to have his blind eye removed in the spring it the antigens are still there.  I wish y0u the best of luck.  Lin

My pooch?  No, Jerry is my 72-year old husband--quite an old dog!
