What's going on with Mira Vista?
« on: January 15, 2010, 06:32:48 PM »

Hi folks,

I just got back from vet after picking up itraconazole.  On sheet vet got back from mira Vista, it says Mika's last count was 15 -- but we all looked at the sheet from them from her last count and it said 4.7.  This is just what happened last time, too, when her readings from the same sample were 35 and 24.  It's something about a "ratio" but I certainly don't understand it.  Do any of you?  Can you explain it to me?  The difference between 4.7 and 15 is mighty serious.  If we had had the reading of 15, we wouldn't have knocked off the medicine for a month.  Rats and oh rats.

I don't understand.  You got two different readings from the same sample (4.7 and 15)?  And previously, conflicting readings of 35 and 24?  My Comet's tests were never ratios.  Always just one number although I never saw sheets from the actual lab, and I have not read about a ratio.

I am very interested in this too, and anxiously waiting responses to your question.

My test results came back the exact same way each time. I had my vet call Mira Vista to get an explanation.  It is something about they save the previous urine sample and run it with the new sample they receive and then they have a comparison or they settle different--something like that.  When my vet explained it to me it made sense.  I also had a friend that worked in a lab and was able to explain it to me better than the vet.  But that has been so long ago I cant put it into words--sorry.  But there really is a logical explanation.  My previous test result numbers on the new test were always different than what the previous test paper actually showed.  I always got a copy of the actual Mira Vista results faxed to me so I could keep them in Gunners folder and compare everything.  On your test results that came back a 4.7 that isnt in the negative range according to Mira Vista so your medicine shouldnt have been "knocked off" for a month.  I have been told by a couple of vets that when you get a negative test result to keep the dog on the meds one full month after the negative result to be sure.  But everyone has so many different opinions when it comes to Blasto.  Best of luck.

Thanks, glad there is a logical explanation for the difference.  We kept Mika on itra for two months after the 4.7 reading but alas, it did not finish it.  I'm still reeling from the reading of 76, but she continues to do well.
