Idea to spread the word about blasto...
« on: April 14, 2010, 09:54:08 AM »

With all the rescues that are here in Wis and other states I was thinking of going on petfinder and looking up the rescues buy state and one buy one sending a copy of the newsletter and asking them to also forward the info
there are tons of rescues and tons of people involved in them
anyone up to helping send out the info (it would be through emails)

I can help.  I have this very old and very clunky computer and am on very slow dial up -- all this limits me.  But I can help, too.

okay I decided to just post on here what I am doing and how i am doing it so if anyone has a little time they can help also. But please put on here what state and letter you are working on so someone else does not re send it.

This is what I am doing I go to petfinder.com look up my state click on it.

http://www.petfinder.com/awo/index.cgi?&action=state&state=WI&city=&limit=100
Then a list of all the rescues and shelters show up.
I get all the contact emails for the A's  and copy and past them on a email  with this in the subjct

Blastomycosis info ...PLEASE pass it on....

Hello
My name is Kristin, and I am trying to spread awareness on a very deadly disease,Blastomycosis.
My Wilson had it back in 2007 and he is a survivor!
Blasto IS in Wisconsin and IS a hot spot! many vets seem to not know to much about this deadly disease so many pets are dieing when they do not have to.They will say it is not common, but it is only not common for people to get. Dogs are like the canaries are to miners. The list is growing faster every year with dogs getting this.
Many dieing when they do not have to.

All I am asking is that you PLEASE read the newsletter and pass it on.

Knowledge is the key to survival!

Thank you,
Kristin Meiller
(I also attach the newsletter)

All the A's have been done for Wisconsin Tomorrow I will check here to see if any one has done the counties starting with B's in Wisconsin if not I will then post that I will do them and so on ands so on...

There are a few different ways to get the contact email for the rescues I can call you and walk you through it if you have never been on petfinder if the contact email is not on the web page click on a animal looking for a home from the rescue and midway down on the right it says email click on it and one will show up i copy and paste them on a email I have waiting to be sent I did all the A's in one email

THANK YOU and all the dogs thank you!!! I do send to cat rescues also cat's can get it  ;)

wright what ever you want or copy an dpaste mind changing names ,state or jsut use my name that is fine

happy sending

Hi Kristin,

I will ahve a bit of time tomorrow evening.  How do I get just the newsletter to attach?  Should I start at the end of the WI petfinder alphabet so we don't cross over?  (I tried control/C to copy newsletter but it didn't.  I tried to highlight newsletter and paste onto WordPerfect, but it wouldn't highlight for "copy."  I guess I could rekey it but golly, there must be a simpler way!

Let me know.  I'll be back tomorrow (Tuesday) in early, early a.m. and again in p.m. to get your answer and then Tues. evening, can begin to help.

Hi Kristin,

I sent you an email with the text I am proposing to accompany the newsletters I send out.  As this is your idea and project, I just wanted to you read it and say its okay before I begin.  I had trouble getting the message to you (I noticed that when I used the hyperlink in your message to me, nothing appeared in the outbox or sent box.)  If you didn't get the text of the letter I propose, let me know and I'll post it here for your review.

carol THANK YOU so much for doing sooo many of the emails. My email address is down and I have been so busy I have not found out what is going on.

I also want to THANK YOU and Deb for all your psotive energy and caring wishes for Wilson.
He is doing well,we think. We have not found any answers as to why his protein levels are high. All tests come back saying nothing is wrong. Organs are all working also.( high protein levels mean dehydrated which he is not, cronic infection we can not find anything, inflamation which could be his wriste causing it or cancer we have not found anything.)
I had taken the boys up north camping to clear my mind and think. The only real answer we have is my dear boy is just getting old on me waaay to fast.
His cough seems to have gone. His front wriste that has been bothering him is better for now. He pushes himself sometime I think. We both forget his has aged some as I have. we really do not know his age we think around 9 or 10ish but he could be older. Looking  at him if you did not know him you would think he was 2 or 3 yrs old but I know all to well he is not. (hard to except) I know he most likly has many yrs to come
His front leg had bone and joint damage from blasto and  is now bone on bone,it grinds so yes it will both him.
He lays down to eat sometimes now he always was a slow eater. Always wanted me there buy him to eat and as long as I am he will. His back foot that he almost lost to blasto the same nail is sore again it appears to be healing we think he hurt it in the river on the rocks.

Time with our loved ones goes so fast. I was so lucky Wilson found me! I am going to enjoy him to the fullest take him and the other 2 on lots of trips this spring/summer/fall. And yes the boat again on lake michigan he is not so crazy about it never cared to be on the boat strange really cause my other 2 love it.
I feel he is depressed cause he knows I am worried again.
He will wag his little tail so happy and then I look at my dear boy and hold his sweet face close to mine and think how could he have aged so fast. Then his whole body goes limp and his head down and ears down and a sad look on his face as if he knows what I  am thinking.
I know I need to not focus on him leaving someday but the now.
Deb and Carol thank you sooo much!
kristin

Hi Kristen,

So good to hear from you! As dogs can relapse with Blasto, glad that all of your tests proved negative.  Old age is a good thing!  It means we made it - as long as our quality of life is good - and it sounds like Wilson is ok. Glad the cough is gone - that is a scary sign of Blasto (to me anyway). Hope you guys enjoy your spring and summer - boating, swimming, camping - lots of fun human/dog stuff to do together!  Our Terra is fine - she was good at the HAWS fundraiser walk - my team raised over $200 to help the shelter (Humane Animal Welfare Society of SE WI).  We are thinking about getting another pup, but are fine right now until fall.  Terra is enjoying being the only dog. Jeff and I miss our Winter very much.  She was our pretty, happy, lovey Golden Girl!  Thanks for updating all of us on Wilson.  Cheers and Hugs!

Hi Kristin,

LOVE the picture of dear Wilson.  Yeah, the aging thing is tough.  I like Jen's way of looking at that--we made it!  In your blasto letter, sorry, it's the editor in me-- dieing should be spelled dying.  I've finished the following letters:  e,f,s,t,u,v,w

Hope someone else can jump in.  I'm going to be tied up for the enxt few days but will get back at it as soon as possible.

  • MY MARGIE
Re: Idea to spread the word about blasto...
« Reply #13 on: May 12, 2010, 12:11:29 PM »

Im sorry Kristin that Wilson is having some problems... my Marge is too. We went to the vet to do another xray of her bone and there some small new stuff that popped up on it but this time around her wrist area. We did bloodwork and urine test and her bloodwork is about normal for her. Her kidney levels are a bit elevated but they always have been. In her urine they found that she has too much calcium which is weird. We are waiting for our blasto urine test today and we also sent out blood to Michigan State U to check on those high calcium levels. My stomach is in knots and I feel sick. Last Sunday (2nd) we spent the day in the emergency room with one of our cats, she was running in the kitchen and caught her side on one of the drawer handles and she pretty much ripped her whole side off. It was as if she got skinned and her side was just all the way flapped over. It was horrific to say the least. She is still recovering now and should be getting her stitches out tomorrow.

I hope that all is well with Wilson! Our time IS so short with our loved ones. Keep us posted on Wilson...

Eva,

I'm SO sorry to hear about Margie and your cat.  That does sound horrific!  Please keep us posted on both.  You and Marge and kitty and Wilson, you're all in my thoughts.  Yes, our time with our animals is so short.  What an amazing amount of joy, fascination, love and trouble they bring us!  They are worth all the trouble in my book.  So far (it almost makes me afraid to write this), all of our menagerie are doing fine healthwise.  We're skirting around a predator wolf or two (we and the animal control officer here have found predated remains of dogs right where we have been walking our dogs) and an adult bear who seems to think our place is just lovely.  Other than that, all is good so far.  That leaves lots of room in my head to send you and Kristin and Glacier all my good thoughts.
In the interest of saving time, I'll answer another post here:  one reason blasto isn't talked about much in tourist areas is because they don't want to frighten people away from visiting or buying a house.  Our community finally is somewhat over that but there definitely had been a "conspiracy of silence."
