wats the odds?
« on: April 15, 2010, 05:31:34 AM »

if my dog never was bad sick. just had a dry cough. never quit eating but maybe 1 day. the blasto was caught early and hes been being treated since 3/23/2010. hes starting to gain weight, feeling better, more active, but he's running into things constantly with no sight that when the blasto is cured through itracon. he can regain any vision. eyes get really cloudy, then in a day or so one will clear up back to normal color and other will be worse. And then vice versa. Also can blasto affect a dogs smell?  For 3 or 4 days he was carryin right back leg also then got back 100% on it and thats about the time the first eye clouded up.

Mika has not been sick one day even though she has had blasto for a year.  We first noticed her jaw seemed off kilter.  We took her to the vet thinking it was a bad tooth or a dislocated jaw.  No, it was blasto.  Her Mira Vista count has been as high as 76 (very, very high).  Yet all the time, she has been eating and running around like the energetic, crazy girl she is.  Early stages, though, she had to be on painkillers, drops for glaucoma, and throughout, on itraconazol and eye salve.  Mika lost sight in one eye due to the blasto.  It took her not long at all to adjust.  It took us longer to accept that this eye is gone, will never come back.  For a while, we would think, oh, she can see light and dark.  But of course, she cannot.  Her retina is fully detached.  I can shine a flashlight on her and only one eye will reflect back.  Sight is not a dog's strongest sense.  They still have their noses.  They still can get around.  They still adore to be pet.  They can always find their bowl!  I have not ever heard of smell being affected but I'm no expert.  Jen told me when I first joined this forum, "relax."  This disease will go its course and we humans can just do the best we know how to help our dogs.  It is GREAT news that your dog has continued to eat.  Keep up the treatments.  Particularly with blasto in the eyes, it can be a long haul.  When our dogs come through this, I think we would all say, it was worth the effort.

Well said, Carol.

Does anyone else find it surprising that this dog goes from clear brown eye to cloudy and then back again ...and lots of MAJOR ups and downs with other symptoms as well -- a month into treatment?

Its so hard to say whether your dog will regain any sight. We knew immediately that Marge's eye would not regain vision and we were okay with that because we could not change it and she was still ALIVE! What our main concern was, treating her good eye. We went to see an opthomologist immediately. They have such advanced tools that he was actually able to look all the way into the back of Marge's eye and see what was going on. He told us that even though the good eye was goopy and didnt look that great, she had no loss of vision so we kept up with many eyedrops in BOTH eyes. I would highly recommend seeing an eye doctor for your dog if possible. They are the ones that would be able to tell you best. How is your dog doing?
